Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of General Marquis de Lafayette’s Tour of Vermont
On June 28, 1825, General Marquis de Lafayette — hero of the American Revolution — began his historic tour of Vermont right here in Windsor. Part of a nationwide celebration honoring his fight for American independence, Lafayette’s visit was met with parades, speeches, and heartfelt public receptions. His journey through the state reflected Vermont’s deep patriotic spirit and lasting commitment to the ideals of liberty and democracy. On the 28th of June, 2025 — exactly two hundred years after Lafayette’s visit to Windsor — Windsor will commemorate this historic visit with a reenactment of the events starting at 7:30am when Lafayette crossed the Connecticut River over the covered bridge from Cornish New Hampshire into Windsor. After the reenactment proceeding have moved onto the rest of the state, celebrations in Windsor will continue throughout the day! The Windsor and West Windsor Historical Societies are working with the American Friends of Lafayette association to commemorate that first visit with reenactors, descendants of Revolutionary War heroes, and local citizens, reproducing events and timing of 200 years ago.
